Cub Scouts: Pack 174

A local Cub Scout group wanted a new look for their website, but something that was really functional for them as well. The old site was HTML-based, and required quite a bit of doing to update it (and don’t even ask how they integrated third-party stuff into it!) They also wanted to have more information made for parents, but they didn’t want such information available to the general public. Before this site, they were using Google Groups for this, but it was hard to manage and maintain, and they were quickly outgrowing the system.

I did a myriad of stuff for them. I created a fresh new design for them (that really does make them stand out from the rest of the Cub and Boy Scouts in the area). I turned the site into a WordPress Membership site, which not only makes stuff easier to update, but it also allowed “Private” areas that would show up only to logged-in parents and scout leadership. It’s even set up so that if you’re logged in, some of the posts will show more information than what the general public sees.

They have an Events manager that allows logged-in members RSVP (and even paid RSVP’s) for upcoming scouting events, and a back-end messaging system that’s pretty much rendered Google Groups obsolete for them. They’re really happy with the system – it’s pretty on the outside, and functional on the inside, and a lot easier to manage and maintain than the old site was.
